School Physical Activity Settings

Children attend school for 6 hours a day, 5 days a week, 40 weeks of the year. There are numerous opportunities for different physical activity environments that are both organised and incidental, group and solo, competitive and friendly. Schools can maximise the potential for participation in these activities with a little forethought, planning and the provision of sports equipment.

Physical activity can be incorporated into the school day in a variety of ways including timetabled physical education classes, incidental activity in the playground and on the oval, organised after school and inter school sports events, and getting to and from school without using a car.

Click on the links below to find out more about the different types of food settings in schools, and look for the Parents Champion Ideas icon on each page for suggestions about how to campaign for change in each area.
