In Western Australia, the Healthy Food and Drink Policy is mandatory in all government schools. The policy applies to school canteens, vending machines, and breakfast programs, as well as to areas in the school where the principal is directly responsible for food and drink supply, including classroom rewards, school camps, and excursions.
The Healthy Food and Drink Policy classifies food and drink using the following traffic light system:
GREEN Fill the menu
AMBER Select carefully
RED Off the menu
Unlike other schools food policies, the WA policy bans all food and drink in the red category from sale or supply through school food environments.
The Western Australian School Canteen Association Inc. (WASCA) assists government and non-government schools to establish and maintain healthy, profitable school systems by providing information, training, resources and advice.
