In Queensland, the Smart Choices - Healthy Food and Drink Supply Strategy underpins all food and drink supply in government schools. This strategy covers situations where food is supplied in the school environment, including tuckshops, vending machines, school excursions and camps, classroom rewards, fundraising, sports days, sponsorship and other school events.
The Smart Choices strategy classifies food and drinks according to nutritional value using the below traffic light system.
GREEN 'Have plenty’ Encourage and promote these foods and drinks in the school.
AMBER ‘Select carefully’ Do not let these foods and drinks dominate choices and avoid large serve sizes.
RED ‘Occasional’ Limit the availability of these foods and drinks to no more than two occasions per term.
For more information visit the Queensland Association of School Tuckshops website.
