In New South Wales, all government schools must abide by the newly implemented Nutrition in Schools Policy which provides guidelines around the provision of food and drink for all school programs and activities. This policy strengthens the existing guidelines for canteens - Fresh Tastes @ School - NSW Healthy School Canteen Strategy by ensuring that healthy eating and good nutrition is promoted to students through a whole school approach. The Nutrition in Schools Policy covers food and drink provision for all on and off-site school activites including excursions, camps, fundraising and school functions.
Through the above strategies, food and drinks are classified using the traffic light labelling system below.

Food items in the red category can only be provided on two occasions per term. 'Red' drinks are banned from sale and supply in all food environments, at all times. The strategy recommends that 'red' food restrictions apply to other food settings including vending machines, classroom rewards, special events (e.g. fundraising), counter sales and contractors.
