Back to School with Healthy Food

In 2008, The Parents' Jury ran this campaign, aiming to support parents in advocating for healthier schools by providing information and resources to help them campaign for positive change.

Children spend a significant amount of time at school each week and at least one third of their daily food is consumed there.  The types of food children eat at school can influence their dietary behaviour well into adult life.
The provision of healthy food is about more than what is sold at a school canteen.  There are many different occasions during the school day, when food is available to children. These include:

  • Food for sale in vending machines
  • Lunchboxes
  • Fruit breaks in the classroom
  • Sweet rewards in the classroom
  • Food sold for fundraising purposes
  • Food provided at school events and excursion

As parents are the best advocates for their child's nutritional welfare, The Parents' Jury compiled a list of advocacy suggestions to help members use their voice for change at their schools. Read more about our top advocacy suggestions.
